Teach Your Child to Ask Good Questions

Asking questions is how children learn. And the better their questions, the more they learn. Teach your child to ask questions that help students explore the world around them.

Good questions begin with the basic question words—Who, What, Where, When, Why and How. You may have learned them as the 5 W's and 1 H.

To help your child practice asking good questions at home:

Choose any object in your home. Explore it using the 5 W's and 1 H. For example, suppose you chose your child's favorite pair of blue jeans. Your questions might include: Who made the jeans? What are they made of? Where were they made? When can you wear them? (When can't you wear them?) Why were blue jeans first made? How many different shirts and sweaters can you wear with your blue jeans?
Play 20 Questions. One person chooses an object, but doesn't say what it is. The other person asks up to 20 questions—each of which can be answered with a Yes or a No—to try and discover what the object is.
