Routines Prevent Morning Mayhem

Do mornings bring out the monster in your child? Routines make it easier for children to learn what to do and when to do it. Even during summer vacation, a morning routine will help start your family's day smoothly. Try these ideas for a fuss-free start to the day:

• Prepare the night before. The fewer things you and your student have to do in the morning—like packing lunches—the better.
• Get up before your child. Allow 15-20 minutes to get yourself ready before waking your child.
• Make a "morning routine" chart. Post a checklist of things you expect your child to do to get ready—get dressed, brush teeth, etc. As your child gets used to these tasks, checking them off on the list will be fun and satisfying.
