Improve Listening Skills to Close the 'Communication Gap'

Children need strong communication skills to succeed in school and to develop healthy relationships. Confidence and self-esteem also come from the ability to speak and listen well.

To boost communication skills, model them for your child:

Send a signal to listen. Say your child's name before you begin speaking.
Use a quiet tone. Whisper sometimes, so your child will have to listen closely.
Get down on your child's level. Sit or lean down so you can look your student in the eye.
Pay undivided attention when your child wants to talk to you. Stop whatever you are doing, or ask your child to wait for a moment until you can.
Encourage your child to express feelings. Respond with phrases such as "I understand" and "Tell me more."
