Improve Listening Skills to Close the 'Communication Gap'

Children need strong communication skills to succeed in school and to develop healthy relationships. Confidence and self-esteem also come from the ability to speak and listen well.

To boost communication skills, model them for your child:

• Send a signal to listen. Say your child's name before you begin speaking.
• Use a quiet tone. Whisper sometimes, so your child will have to listen closely.
• Get down on your child's level. Sit or lean down so you can look your student in the eye.
• Pay undivided attention when your child wants to talk to you. Stop whatever you are doing, or ask your child to wait for a moment until you can.
• Encourage your child to express feelings. Respond with phrases such as "I understand" and "Tell me more."
