Give Your Child Appropriate Words to Express Anger

It's the phrase every parent and caregiver dreads: "I hate you!" It's also one many of them will probably hear eventually. When children get angry (for example, when they're experiencing consequences of misbehavior), they may lash out with negative words. If your child does, avoid overreacting or imposing more punishment. Instead, wait until you are both calm and explain to your child that "hate" isn't a nice word and it isn't acceptable. Then, offer some alternative things to say the next time, such as "I feel angry" or "I'm disappointed."
