Three Ways to Help Your Child With Reading

Helping with reading is easy if your child is a strong reader. Simply encourage independent reading. Set up a cozy, well-lit place to read, and provide a variety of reading materials that match your child's interests.

If, on the other hand, your child finds reading challenging, additional support from you can make a difference.

To help your child get more out of reading:

• Pre-read the material. Look for words that might give your child trouble. Go over them together before your student begins to read.
• Be available. As your child reads, stay close by to help with difficult words.
• Ask questions as your child reads, like, “Who’s the story about?” “Where does it take place?” Answering them reinforces understanding and may help your elementary schooler feel more confident about reading.
