Make Eye Contact When You Make Corrections

Children are more likely to obey instructions if they are really listening to them. This is especially true when adults are correcting their behavior.

Here’s a three-step way to make sure your elementary schooler takes your corrections on board:

  1. Move close to your child when you need to correct behavior. Say your child's name. Raise your voice only slightly—just enough to get your child to look at you as you speak.
  2. Keep a neutral expression on your face. (That means no smiles and no bug eyes from anger.) Make eye contact.
  3. Explain the behavior change you want and hold eye contact for a moment after speaking. You'll make your point and your child will hear it.
