What messages do you send your child during study time at home? Your actions say many things about your attitudes toward your elementary schooler and learning.
Some families don’t look at their children’s work. They may not even ask whether it’s finished. They are sending the message that “Your learning doesn’t interest me.” Other families look only for errors. They are saying, “Smart people never make mistakes.” Still others do their children’s work for them, so it will be correct. They are really telling their kids, “You can’t learn.”
Those are not the messages you want to send. Instead, send the message that your child can learn by working hard. Remind your student that everyone makes mistakes, but smart people learn from their mistakes and try not to make the same ones again. Review your student's schoolwork, and ask about what your child is learning. This makes it clear that you care about education.
By sending messages that you care about your child and learning, you're not only helping with schoolwork. You're also helping your child on the path to becoming a strong student and a self-reliant adult. And that is the most important assignment you and your child can ever complete.
