Keep Up Routines That Support Learning
Keeping certain routines going at home throughout the summer break supports student success in the fall.
Your child should still spend some time reading each day. Reading is a fundamental skill, and children must practice or their skills will get rusty. Set aside 30 minutes each day for quiet reading. Plan regular family reading activities as well.
Be sure your child gets regular exercise, too. Today, about one in five children in the Unites States has obesity, which can affect both health and learning. Experts say that inactivity is a primary cause of childhood obesity. Regular physical fitness activities have also been shown to increase students’ alertness and improve memory.
Your child should also have responsibilities around the house. Children enjoy learning new skills, whether it’s how to wash their clothes or how to make a simple household repair. The feeling of competence they gain helps them tackle new challenges. Regular household responsibilities also build their sense of belonging and value to the family.
