Creative Ways to Stay Connected

What kind of family life does it take to produce kids who are highly creative? One four-year study of creative children found that a key factor is something all families can do—enjoy their kids.

Families with creative children spend time together working on various projects. They plan, dream and travel together. They are often short on time, like many families. But they’re creative in how they use the time they have.

When adults in these families can't be with their children, they find ways to stay connected by:

Calling their children from work for a short chat after school. They learn the latest news. They answer pressing questions. Plus, they show their children they are thinking of them.
Leaving notes to communicate. If they won’t be home before their children’s bedtimes, the parents ask their kids to leave them a note. They might also leave a note on their children’s pillows the next morning.
Using photos to stay in touch. When the parents are out of town, they ask their children to take pictures to show what the kids did and how they felt.
Keeping a family logbook in a well-trafficked spot in the house. Family members jot down their thoughts, reminders, triumphs and concerns.
Talking over dessert. If they miss having dinner as a family, they share dessert later on.
