Egg Your Child on With a Science Experiment
Balls bounce, but do eggs?
You and your child can find out by taking these steps:
- Place an uncooked egg gently into a container that has a lid.
- Pour in enough vinegar to cover the egg.
- Place the lid on the container and let it stand for two to three days.
- Remove the lid and discard the vinegar.
Let your child touch the egg. Ask, “What do you think happened to the eggshell?” (Answer: The vinegar dissolved it, leaving only the egg’s inner membrane to keep the egg together.)
The rubbery, squishy egg can be gently bounced (from a low height) and squeezed. Be sure to keep some paper towels handy in case it breaks!
