Egg Your Child on With a Science Experiment

Egg Your Child on With a Science Experiment

Balls bounce, but do eggs?

You and your child can find out by taking these steps:

  1. Place an uncooked egg gently into a container that has a lid.
  2. Pour in enough vinegar to cover the egg.
  3. Place the lid on the container and let it stand for two to three days.
  4. Remove the lid and discard the vinegar.

Let your child touch the egg. Ask, “What do you think happened to the eggshell?” (Answer: The vinegar dissolved it, leaving only the egg’s inner membrane to keep the egg together.)

The rubbery, squishy egg can be gently bounced (from a low height) and squeezed. Be sure to keep some paper towels handy in case it breaks!
