Play an Alphabet Hunt Picture Game

Strong students can concentrate. They can pay attention to details. Here’s a game that will foster these skills in your child. You can play together, or invite others to join in.

To play:

Give each player a sheet of paper with the letters of the alphabet listed down the left side.
Find a large picture with lots of detail.
Sit where everyone can see the picture.
Find something in the picture that begins with each letter and write it down (write only one word for each letter). Each player should make his or her own list. Make sure you can’t see one another’s papers. It’s OK if you or your child can’t find a word for every letter. Just give it your best try.

The winner is the one who comes up with the most words in five minutes. Or, it might be the one with the most unusual words. Or, compare lists and cross out words that are on more than one player’s list. In that version, players score a point for every word on their list that’s not crossed out.
