Use Grocery Store Ads for Math Skill Practice

Grocery store ads are useful tools for practicing math facts. With their bright pictures and large numbers, they are easy for even young elementary schoolers to use.

Look through the ads together. Help your child find pictures of a few favorite foods. Then, cut out the pictures along with their prices.

Now, challenge your child to create math word problems using the pictures. “Joey bought 1 pound of bananas for 50 cents. How much would it cost to buy 2 pounds of bananas?”

If your child is older, ask what half a pound of bananas would cost. Or you could ask how much change Joey would get from a dollar. Later, use the word problems your child developed to create flash cards with the picture and the problem on the front and the answer on the back.

You can also check the ads together as you prepare your shopping list. Let your child choose a few items for you to buy. Have your elementary schooler estimate how much it will cost to purchase the items, then add up the prices to check.
