Offer Opportunities to Practice Thinking
Strong thinking skills are vital for learning every school subject. To help your elementary schooler strengthen thinking skills, provide opportunities to practice. Encourage your child to:
- Identify patterns. Ask what your student sees in a spider's web, for example.
- Self-evaluate performance on a test or assignment. Ask your child, "What did you do well? What would you do differently next time?"
- Explain reasoning. Ask questions like, "Why do you think you acted that way?"
- Look for different ways to solve a problem. Help your student list the pros and cons of each possible solution.
