Turn Boring Road Trips Into Fun Math Lessons
Adults use math to plan trips all the time. When kids help, they learn that math is both useful and fun. Trip planning involves math concepts like:
- Addition. Have your teen use a road map (printed or online) to determine possible routes, then add up how many miles your family would travel by going different ways. Challenge your student to find the shortest route without using a navigation app or website.
- Decimals. Have your teen figure out how much it will cost to fill up your tank with gas. How often will you have to fill it?
- Division. If your trip is 145 miles, for example, ask your teen to divide this by how many miles per hour you'll average to find out how long the trip will take.
- Estimation. Notice signs that say how far away your exit is. Have your teen estimate how long it will take to get there.
- Measurement. Have your teen convert kilometers to miles or vice versa. One mile equals 1.61 kilometers, and 1 kilometer equals .62 miles.
